Rail and Mass Transit Infrastructure Case Studies

Rail Station Refurbishments

McLellan provides M&E design services for the refurbishment of railway stations on the National Rail and London Underground Ltd (LUL) systems.  Typical assignments include tunnel and platform cooling for LUL Central Line, lighting, cable management, M&E Services and fire main upgrades for the East London Line and M&E design services coordination for LUL Shepherds Bush station.

Rail Assignments Station Access

Working with the Civil Engineer, McLellan provided M&E design services for the provision of ‘step free’ passenger access to a number of stations in the London and South East Rail Network. The work included the installation of a number of passenger lifts.

Knightsbridge Station Modernisation and Congestion Relief Project

Tube Lines is responsible for maintaining and upgrading the infrastructure of Knightsbridge Sub-Surface Underground Station on the Piccadilly Line. In order to relieve congestion the Hans Crescent entrance, ticket hall and escalator shaft were reconfigured and the Knightsbridge entrance was modernised. McLellan was responsible for the electrical modernisation design and for site co-ordination of the mechanical, electrical and communication services.

East London Line Central Section Stations Upgrade

The East London Line uses the original Brunel Thames Tunnel at Rotherhithe and was upgraded and extended by Transport for London to establish a new through service from Dalston Junction in the North to West Croydon in the South (Phase 1). McLellan was responsible for designing the mechanical and electrical services and new dry fire hydrants for the six central section sub-surface stations between Whitechapel and Surrey Quays and for a traction sub-station at Shadwell. McLellan also designed a 66kV cabling diversion for the new carriage works depot at New Cross.

Rail Reliability, Availability and Maintenance Studies (RAMS)

McLellan has conducted a number of RAM studies for both National Rail and London Underground projects. The work provides theoretical analysis of the reliability of the key mechanical, electrical and control areas of the Networks.

Cooling the Tube

The environmental temperatures in many underground stations are uncomfortable and expected to become significantly worse as a consequence of the current tube upgrade programmes.  McLellan has provided a range of mechanical and electrical designs for cooling underground stations to enable Transport for London to progress with the most viable solutions. Cooling options include large or upgraded fans to draw in cool air from the surface, direct cooling by bore-hole water and use of dedicated refrigeration plants.

Rail Maintenance Depots

Provision of M&E design services for the installation of automatic carriage wash system.  Assignments have covered the design of water and waste systems, the provision of power and local lighting and the rerouting of power lines.
